It is our mission to provide future doulas with the quality education and practical skills they need to navigate a meaningful and sustainable career in birth work.
At Harbor Birth Institute, we are committed to equipping the next generation of doulas with the skills and resources they need to serve growing families. As doulas we know that knowledgable, compassionate support in labor enables families to actualize their ideal birthing experience by making empowered choices for their family. By training doulas that are educated to offer intuitive, practical skills, and sound resources, we are investing in the beautiful ongoing cycle of life and family, to which we all belong.
HBI MISSION STATEMENT
Harbor Birth Institute is a certifying organization providing mentorship, fellowship, apprenticeship, training, support, networking and a body of professionally trained, equipped and skilled doulas. We work within evidence-based standards of practice, maintain high standards of professional conduct and integrity and utilize regular continuing education to ensure accountability and to enhance and keep our skills the most up to date.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
We believe that pregnancy and childbirth are organic and natural processes.
We believe in providing families with education and resources about birth and birth choices, so that they can be their own advocates in the process. We appreciate medical advancements and interventions and believe they can be a blessing if used responsibly. We support a person’s right to give birth however they choose and will never allow personal opinions, bias or judgment to enter their sacred birth space.
We believe that the way a family prepares for their birth lays the foundation for conviction in many other areas of their life and offers the opportunity to promote health and wellness long-term.
We believe in providing education and resources to families prenatally and during their birthing time when and if we are asked.
We believe the doula’s role is to provide informational, physical, and emotional support for the birth person and their partner.
We believe that providing any advice that is medical in nature is considered to be out of scope of a doula’s role and we do not support this in any form.
We strive to collaborate with other birth professionals in our community to provide long-term solutions for better health, overall wellness, non-discriminatory practices, safer childbirth options and parenting ministries that foster relationships and education.
